Panel Overview
The wireless communications market covers products ranging from next-generation cell
phones and broadband wireless data communications to the home, to new software
applications and services running on wireless personal digital assistants (PDAs) like the
Palm VII.
In a report from the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association, a new customer
signs up for wireless service every 2 seconds. In 1998, 13.9 million new subscribers
activated wireless phones, bringing the year-end total to 69.2 million subscribers.
Capital investment in wireless companies increased 31% to $60.5 billion in 1998, and the
wireless industry now accounts for 1.3 million jobs of the US economy.
Those numbers are expected to rise dramatically through 1999 and 2000 as wireless
subscription costs continue to drop and new services, such as wireless Internet
connectivity, are introduced to consumers.
Entrepreneurs with innovative business concepts and new product or service offerings
have an opportunity to make a big splash in this emerging marketplace. But identifying
which business concepts will succeed is still a challenging proposition.
STARTech Business Development Center and the MIT Enterprise Forum of Dallas - Fort Worth
will
bring together panelists including representatives from area wireless technology companies
and venture capital firms a 3-hour public seminar to discuss these wireless market
opportunities.
Refreshments and seminar material will be provided
