2 Successful Business Models
Moderator:
Panelists:
-
Keith W. Brown, Founder and General Manager, GeneScreen Vice President,
Orchid Biosciences, Inc.
-
Donald J. Hayes, President and CEO, MicroFab Technologies, Inc.
Program:
What does it take to be a successful ongoing concern as a biotechnology
company? Why do some North Texas companies succeeded when others have failed?
Getting back-to-basics provides the backdrop for the November MIT Forum, which
features two companies successfully competing at the leading edge of this new
technology revolution. Founders of Texas-based GeneScreen and MicroFab
Technologies Inc. will present the stories of their companies and the lessons
learned as they struggled to become profitable biotechnology companies. Come
hear how each of these companies discovered ways to adapt their technologies to
market needs.
"We are proud to be partnering with the Dallas Forum for BioMedical
Technology to bring these leading companies before the DFW business
community," said Neil Kaden, MIT Forum Chairman. "Our moderator,
Dr. Connie L. Luthy, works at the national and international levels and has done
much to develop a sense of community in the local biomedical industries. I
believe her panel will have an interesting story to tell the entrepreneurs and
investors who attend our forum, and will me even more successful than our
previous
Biotech forum."
GeneScreen, www.genescreen.com,
began operations in Dallas in 1987 as a spinout from UT Southwestern Medical
School, offering genetic and identity testing for paternity and forensics. Today
GeneScreen is among the largest independent DNA testing providers in the U.S.,
with test facilities in Texas, Ohio and California. GeneScreen now offers bone
marrow testing and is preparing to offer high throughput SNP scoring services
for pharmacogenetic clinical trials. The latter is a result of its acquisition
in January 2000 by Orchid Biosciences (Nasdaq: ORCH, www.orchid.com),
a leading provider of products, services and technologies for single nucleotide
polymorphism (SNP) scoring. Orchid completed an IPO in May 2000. Keith W. Brown
joined GeneScreen in 1988 as Founder, President and CEO. Prior to joining
GeneScreen, he managed the clinical electrophoresis business for CIBA Corning
Diagnostics Corporation, where he was employed for 10 years. Mr. Brown has a BS
in Computer Science and Statistics from the University of Manitoba, an MBA from
Harvard, and serves as a director for Hybrigen, Inc. GeneScreen is a founding
sponsor of the Dallas Forum for BioMedical Technology.
MicroFab Technologies, Inc., www.microfab.com,
was founded in 1984 as a consulting and applications development company focused
on ink-jet printing technology. Donald J. Hayes holds a B.S. and M.S. in Physics
from Louisiana State University and a Ph.D. in Materials Science from Rice. He
has over 25 years experience managing research and development of process driven
manufacturing for ink-jet printers, semiconductor devices, and electronic
assemblies while at MicroFab, Polaroid, Mead Office Systems, Texas Instruments,
and Boeing. As Senior Manager of Electronic Manufacturing Technology at
Polaroid, Dr. Hayes was responsible for electronic manufacturing support for all
Polaroid products, including PCB and flex circuit assemblies. As Manager of
Critical Processes at Mead Office Systems, he directed development of
manufacturing processes for a 400 dpi, 130 ppm ink-jet printer. At Texas
Instruments, he was production manager for the bubble memory product line. Dr.
Hayes has been awarded 42 patents and has over 15 patent applications
outstanding. He is a member of the Engineering Counsel for the Eric Johnson
School of Engineering at the Univ. of Texas at Dallas, and a member of the
Materials Technology Review Board, Texas State Technical Institute. Dr. Hayes is
a member of AEA, IMAPS, SME, NCMS and AMA.
Admission is $35 for the general public, $25 for DFBT members, and $10 for students.
