Panel Overview:
The program, "Digital Security: The Critical Path to the Future of the
Internet," will focus on challenges to deployment of digital signature
technology, "trusted third party" infrastructure, digital rights
management (DRM), financial risk management, and the development of public trust
in these new paradigms.
The panel will address factors that cause low public confidence in electronic
transactions on the Internet, and will discuss new technologies and strategies
that will ensure future security of digital signatures. Among the issues are
deployment of public key infrastructure (PKI), the most common form of digital
signatures, which has been held back by the government because it is a military
application. The issue of building infrastructure for "trusted third
parties" that will be instruments for transacting business with digital
signatures will center on the risks of use and management. An update on current
legislation affecting digital security, on both national and state levels, will
also be discussed.
